I feel MUCH better about life when the colony can go a day or two without loosing power. While wind turbines do suffer higher wear and tear and for this reason I recommend keeping them closer to airlocks, I try to get to a situation where I produce about 60-70% of my power through solar and 20-25% from wind (enough to get through a long days long storm), and lightning rods. It's so nice early on to avoid a blackout because lightning charges your battery rather than killing your colonist dome.Īlso, look very carefully at your energy mix, I tend to find putting two large solars, and two large wind plants with at least two of the largest energy energy storage units is the way to go, but it's a growth situation, where you focus on getting those power inputs up to the top tier, and then you can stabilize. Particularly on the Storm planets, energy comes in three forms, Wind, Solar and ironically, Lightning, while not in itself sustainable as a power-source, it's DEFINITELY something I aim to put up, as close to the core of the colony as soon as the metal budget allows. Your energy production - simply put, a balance of storage to production is critical (always be able to produce in any one of the two conditions (storms, or sunshine), and protect your base and infrastructure with lightning rods (obviously). Your farming - if you have enough farmers you can bang out maximum food with peas, tomatoes and lettuce which make for salads, but I tend to like pasta producing foodstuffs, which offer lower intensity of work and good food outputs once / if your population is stable. I also tend to like to handle growing the colony CAREFULLY, particularly in austere conditions like the S colony, and also non-timed Dark Moon or other situations.įrom what I can see from your colony, it doesn't look like your colony design is 1/2 bad, but what is probably killing you is two things The minimum I feel "comfortable" with, is (2 workers, 3-4 farmers, 2 engineers and 2 medics) I tend to follow a simple ratio, in the earliest colonies you need nothing more than just a few colonists.Īt the barest minimum I like to have 1 worker, 2 farmers, 1 engineer and 1 medic, which is (I feel) the minimum sustainable colony.
